Startup founders need to be prepared at all times because they never know when they’d be called upon for an elevator pitch.

A scenario played itself around me recently. Peter Aletor a Director at APEL Capital gave a weekend visit to our office (Opolo) sometimes last month and went around our workspaces to understand what we are building.

Mike, founder of guddiesplanet.com one of our portfolio startups also happened to be using our boardroom for an advisory session.

Peter was impressed and was about leaving when we beguiled him to one of our funny culture of taking a picture with our logo. We humbly interrupted Mike to handle the camera for us and he happened to be wearing his Startup shirt.

“What is Guddiesplanet about, Mike?” Peter asked. Mike smiled sheepishly and went on to read his pitch deck verbatim going on a long spiral. Peter nodded, Mike, didn’t know if he got it or not.

Guddiesplanet is an eCommerce platform for Millenials.” I interjected…”They are also experimenting on credit buying for with a new branch out called credmart.co to focus on their credit feature on their eCommerce store that allows users to buy now and pay later…”

The response we got from Peter was a “wow” and he got it instantly and went ahead to ask more questions. He shared his card and told him to reach out.

Startup Founders must understand that Investors hear lots of ideas every day and they know big players playing in your field already. Learn to excite people with the little feature you are experimenting, understand what makes your product unique and pitch that uniqueness and your plan to get there.
